Head of Human Resources Dept.
Dear Mr Lee
I am a penultimate year student studying B.Sc. Economics at the London School of Economics. I am interested in applying for the position of Global Consumer Bank 2017 summer internship program at Citibank Korea.
What I find the most appealing about Citibank to me is its emphasis on global perspective and forward-looking approach to the financial market. Citibank is operating in more than 100 countries across the four regions globally, making its financial services accessible to both developed and emerging economies. As emerging economies are to rise as the new frontier for banks, Citibank’s global perspective is forward-looking and desirable. Particularly as its branch in South Korea has successfully landed as the biggest foreign bank in the country, I thought of this branch to be an outstanding example of global expansion integrating well with the indigenous economy and would like to learn its spirit by working as a summer intern.
Consumer banking is interesting to me in that it is my best option for me to contribute to the society. I wish to make an impact to the world using the qualities I have, which are my knowledge in economics, global mind, and team-working skills. I like economics for using both quantitative and qualitative methods in understanding the society. The desire to learn economics deeper led me to my current university, where I further developed my intellectual vigour for economics, mathematics, and econometrics. I particularly found my passion in the field of macroeconomics, as it involves the study of financial products and regulations. Hence I developed my interest in banking, which can utilize my knowledge and passion. I wish to provide financial advice to consumers as they must distribute their wealth over a lifetime to maximize their utility throughout their stages of life, and financial investment can be an effective tool to distribute income over a lifetime. Hence after graduation, I wish to develop my career as a professional in consumer banking.
My experience of growing up in Korea, Tonga, and currently studying in London gifted me with global mind and a respect for diversity. Diversity is valuable for me in that learning the different virtues from different people can create a constructive environment and thrive from a greater pool of knowledge. Through my life, I have met people of all cultures, and I enjoyed meeting new people and adopt their virtues. As a global institution, LSE has its students from all countries, granting me with opportunities to learn the reality of economies behind the figures and statistics and hear ideas I would not have thought. Through the weekly LSESU Economics Society Sen club sessions where students and academics discuss contemporary economic issues, I found the different ideas from different attendees to be arousing my interest and respect for them. The sessions were ideal for me to share my ideas and communicate, which implicitly nurtured communication skills and factual integrity in my words. With this respect for diversity and global perspective acquired from communicating with different people, I believe I possess the qualities you are looking for.
I was fortunate to participate in a volunteering activity which involves translating children’s stories to Braille and publish a book. I took the charge of translation part, so besides translating we had to wait for my colleagues to choose the stories, while ensuring our work finishes by the deadline for the funding and publishing groups to finish the project quickly. The process of managing my group and calibrating deadlines with other groups taught me how to work in a big team with multiple departments. In addition, I learned leadership skills, of representing my group members in executive meetings and encouraging them to work more productively. I believe leadership and teamwork skills I learned from this experience would be useful for Citibank’s summer internship program.
With my interest in banking and the qualities I acquired from my experiences, I am certain that I will succeed in Citi Summer Internship Program. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you soon.
